Overview

The NC State University sailing team competes in the ICSA's South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association conference and participates in regattas during the Fall and Spring seasons. Fielding a co-ed and women's team, as well as an offshore sailing team, our student-athletes maintain a rigorous practice and training schedule, both on the water and off, in addition to a demanding academic workload. Competition is fierce, but participating in intercollegiate racing offers an exciting and rewarding path to becoming a world-class sailor. We compete using Flying Juniors (FJs) and 420s, both highly maneuverable and responsive dinghies. In offshore, we compete in keelboats ranging from Navy 44s to J/105s to J/70s and more. The Race Team travels to regattas from Miami to Virginia to Boston on a regular basis. Our home lake and practice facility is Lake Crabtree at Lake Crabtree County Park in Raleigh, NC. We also train extensively and host regatta events in our coastal home, Oriental, North Carolina.

Our Conference

As a part of SAISA, we compete on a regular basis against some of the most storied programs in College Sailing including the College of Charleston, perennial sailing powerhouses such as the University of South Florida, Eckerd College, and even in-state rivals UNC-Wilmington, the University of North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Duke. For the past 10 years, NC State's sailing team has succeeded in reaching regional championships, ending the spring 2022 season ranked 1st of 30+ teams in SAISA, the top-ranked team in North Carolina for the 10th year running, and qualifying for the ICSA Gill Coed College Sailing National Championship Finals for the first time in program history. in 2021. Winning the 2022 SAISA Conference Championship for the first time in program history, the SailPack returns to ICSA Gill Coed College Sailing National Championships in 2022, while the SailPack Women's Team, first started in the fall of 2013, earned an at-large bid to ICSA College Sailing Women's National Championships in 2022 for the first time ever. NC State Sailing has won the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) Conference Championship in 2021-22, and 2022-23, as well as qualified for ICSA College Sailing Nationals in 2021, 2022, and 2023 for Open (coed) competition, and 2022, and 2023 for Women's competition.

About College Sailing

Sanctioned by the ICSA and US Sailing, "college sailing began on an informal, club basis in the 1890's, and organized racing started in 1928. It has grown to include more than 250 active colleges, and racing now occurs on every weekend during fall and spring seasons and on many weekends during the winter. It is a truly coeducational sport, and it has proved itself the best incubator for the development of racing skills. Former college sailors have always numbered significantly among Olympic medalists and America's Cup competitors."
